As we all know it’s festival season and another festival that you won’t want to miss out on is the Electric Forest. The Electric Forest Festival is a four-day multi-genre event, with a focus on electronic and jam band genres held in Rothbury, Michigan from June 25th- June 28th. This festival is both a collaboration and an experiment in the community. There are many ways to be involved in the Forest, from work to play, and everywhere in between. The Plug In Program offers creative opportunities to jump in and participate through contests, artistic opportunities, and adventures of all kind. This gives everyone an opportunity to add to the magic of the forest. Everything each member of the Forest Family does, big or small, shapes the festival’s outcome.
A great Plug in Program is Electricology which is Electric Forest’s innovative sustainability program. This program provides the community a chance to win exclusive prizes for being a part of the clean up efforts on site. Another Plug In Program is Electric Forces which is a new feature that has been added this year’s festival. It holds the opportunity for Veterans to share their knowledge and skills as workshops for the Forest Family. Burning man isn’t your usual festival. It’s a city wherein almost everything that happens is created entirely by its citizens, who are active participants in the experience. There are over 5 1/2 square miles of desert turned over as a blank canvas and filled with all manner of incredible art, weird and wonderful people to watch and events and workshops to try. Everyone is an individual at this festival but dressing trends and tribes have developed over the years. There is all kind of debauchery and games that you won’t want to miss out on. Participants join in the effort to co-create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to art and community. The people who make up Black Rock City are not just attendees, they are active participants in every sense of the word: they create the city, the interaction, the art, the performance and ultimately the experience that is Burning Man. Fire art is part of the essential fabric of Black Rock City. Fire is incorporated into art installations, theme camps, and many performances.
The theme of this years Burning man is about mirrors and masks, mazes and merger. It will be a kind of magic show that takes the form of an old-fashioned carnival. This Carnival of Mirrors asks three essential questions: within our media-saturated world, where products and people, consumption and communion morph into an endlessly diverting spectacle, who is the trickster, who is being tricked, and how might we discover who we really are? Burning Man’s carnival, will perform an even more subversive trick- its motto is Include the Rube. The wall dividing the observer from observed will disappear, as by an act of magic; through the alchemy of interaction, everyone at once can be the carny and the fool.
This year a funhouse at the center of the carnival will contemplate the puzzle of self-consciousness. Many kinds of masks and mirrors will line the corridors and chambers of this interactive maze. Here people will confront a shuffled deck of selves: the me they want to be (but aren’t), the me they repudiate (but are), the me they can’t imagine (but might be). At the heart of this disorienting maze, a final passage will reveal a courtyard that surrounds the Burning Man. Photo booths will record the faces of participants, merging them into a swirling stream that will envelop the entire body of the Man. The brittle mirror and the occulting mask will melt away, and at this point there’ll be no gag, no swag, no souvenir of self; the show will be you.
The main event, the burning of the Man, is on September 7th. Festival-goers gather to watch the ceremonial burn as fireworks and flame throwers circle him. Many participants in the festival attach a great deal of meaning to the festival’s climax: it supports the “leave no trace” mantra and has spiritual significance to some. The burning of the Man is a spectacle and breathtaking event and a fitting finale for a strange, immense and unforgettable experience of a lifetime.
Burning Man takes place August 30- September 7, 2015 in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. Click below for an epic video of the time-relapse of the Burning Man festival. The only limits of Burning Man’s 10 principles are the bounds of your imagination so make sure you get your tickets for the unforgettable experience of a lifetime!
Josh Wink is an electronic music DJ, label owner, producer, remixer, and an artist. He is a native of Philadelphia and a pioneering DJ in the American rave scene during the early 1990’s, Wink was the most prominent exponent of the tribal forms of techno and house in the U.S. Taking trends, making trends, and breaking trends, Josh Wink’s music has always experimented and influenced. The sound of Josh Wink today remains one of a man unafraid to walk the border between stylistic boundaries. Steve Bug is a German DJ and music producer in the field of minimal house. His DJ skills and a keen, innovative ear led him not down the typical path of the early nineties trance and harder dance scene, but instead towards a fresher, hybrid sound-merging stripped deep house, tweaked out acid and more minimal forms of techno and electronic music.
These two talented DJs are coming together to participate in a series of four back-to-back performances at Kehakuma on the legendary terrace of Space Ibiza. Bug’s house-meets-techno sound has served as a driving force behind today’s commonly dubbed “Berlin sound,” and represents a natural compliment to Wink’s acid-edged genre-blending brand of house. The first of the four exclusive back-to-back performances will take place this Saturday, June 13, with support form Radio Slave and Javi Bora. The remaining three sets will follow each month with dates on July 11, August 8 and September 12. Don’t miss out on these four unforgettable performances by these two unique and talented DJs!
The Swedish duo, Olle Corneer and Stefan Engblom, came together in 2006, combining pop-leaning electro sounds and an over-the-top attitude. This eccentric duo injects their EDM with humor that fills dance floors to its capacity. They don’t care about genres. They don’t care about smartness. They don’t care about the things you care about. They just care about making their audience wanting to jump up and down all night long. Their single “The Fashionista Swindle” parodied the Sex Pistols with its artwork, “The Great Smorgasbord” introduced their love of processed meat, while “Do the Dada” introduced their love of being self-referential. Any song they choose to play fills the floor wherever the hottest electro is welcomed. They went official in 2009 with their debut album, Just Do The Dada, released by the Hussle label and featuring track titles like “Don’t Snort the Yellow Snow” and “So You Wanna Be a Prankster?” Their tour that followed after their album release, introduced Europe to their kinetic live shows where inflatables flew through the crowd, booking agents were forced to “Do the Dada” themselves, and the duo’s tour rider stated that the backstage area must be filled with champagne and bananas or the venue was punished with a tech-house set.
In 2010, they toured with Tiesto, playing remixes from Kylie Minogue to Chickenfoot and collaborating with Dimitri Vegas, Like Mike, and Tara McDonald. In 2011 they headlined the Electric Daisy Festival in Los Angeles with a full marching band to perform their song “White Noise/Red Meat”. In July 2014, Dada Life debuted Dada Land: The Voyage, a mini-festival in San Bernardino, CA attended by over 10,000 fans where the duo arrived via hot air balloon. Dada Life will be gracing New York City tonight with their unique and enviable beats. Be sure to join this hilarious and extremely talented duo tonight at LAVO NYC for an unforgettable night. As Dada Life would say, “Destroy dance music and have fun. Don’t look back in the past. Always go forward. Don’t think too much. Always follow the money”. Daft Punk is an electronic music duo consisting of French musicians Guy Manuel and Thomas Bangalter. Daft Punk reached significant popularity in the late 1990’s with house movement in France and has continued success in the years following. The group is known for using visual and story components associated with their musical productions, and for using disguises while in public and/or performing. They are specifically known for using ornate helmets and gloves to assume robot personas in most of their public appearances since 2001. The duo rarely grant interviews or appear on television. Last summer, BBC Worldwide France announced it was working on a documentary about Daft Punk.
The documentary, Daft Punk Unchained, has finally released a date and will air on French TV station Canal+ on June 24th. Directed by Hervé Martin Delpierre and co-written by Delpierre and Marina Rozenman, the documentary is set to feature appearances from Kanye West, Pharrell, Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, Michel Gondry, Paul Williams, Todd Edwards, photographer Peter Lindbergh, Pete Tong, designer Tony Gardner, and artist Leiji Matsumoto. The pair’s former manager is also set to make an appearance in the form of an extended interview and may provide one of the most transparent looks into a name that has become synonymous with mystery. With this dynamic duo’s mystery and talent, everyone is eager for this documentary to be released and discover the mystery that lies underneath their disguises.
M.A.N.D.Y. is a Berlin-based Microhouse, minimal house, techno group consisting of the talented duo, Patrick Bodmer and Philipp Jung. There is an air of mystery of the true meaning behind the acronym M.A.N.D.Y., which is an alias that embodies the mutual talents of these two childhood friends. They readily indulge this curiosity by toying with various clever possibilities, including Me AND You, but the truth is likely a meaning of their individual talents that has not been made to the public. Their ultimate expression of their dance music phenomenon is attributed to their foot stamping and hair flying techniques. They have a unique niche in electronic music by consistently selecting productions that induce their audience into a somatic frenzy.
M.A.N.D.Y. joined Booka Shade and DJ T to create the Get Physical Records and produced a caliber of electricity that rippled throughout the EDM community and into the relative mainstream that started first in Frankfurt and then in Berlin and now all over the world. When all three groups joined forces, they have pushed the boundaries of dance music to compile an enviable arsenal of electro kissing house while caressing disco and flirting with techno. With Booka Shade, M.A.N.D.Y was responsible for the club hit “Body Language,” which was named “Ibiza Track of the Season 2005” and has been licensed to more than 100 compilations. M.A.N.D.Y continues to power through with a perpetual rebirth into pulsating beats and pretty lights.
This dynamic duo are some of the most heavily booked house-DJs in Germany and continually gaining recognition internationally. Get Physical label released Hausmusik Vol. 1 last year with the idea of creating music well-suited for home enjoyment as well as on sweaty dance floors. The home listening series returns this month for a second time with the release of Hausmusik Vol. 2 with cuts from James Holden, M.A.N.D.Y. and Francesco Tristano to demonstrate the professional sound systems and sweaty dance floor antiques from the comfort of your home or a private party for an intimate selection of people and music. Don’t miss out on Get Physical label curator M.A.N.D.Y (Phillipp Jung) at Up & Down (244 W 14th St, New York, New York 10011) in NYC for this week’s installment of the Porn Shop. He will be joined by 2 other special guests alone with ZigZag regular Bru. Get ready for a night of mind boggling music with a dash of deep seductive vibes. Highlighting a charged path from Moscow to Miami, the Russian innovative trio who amplify the progressive and electronic house sound are known as Swanky Tunes. With their uplifting anthemic sound, the Smolensk based music pioneers deliver dance floor bangers to nightclubs and festivals around the globe. Whether it be in the studio, on stage, or the global music charts, the Showland label headliners are at the forefront of electronic dance music.
