M.A.N.D.Y. is a Berlin-based Microhouse, minimal house, techno group consisting of the talented duo, Patrick Bodmer and Philipp Jung. There is an air of mystery of the true meaning behind the acronym M.A.N.D.Y., which is an alias that embodies the mutual talents of these two childhood friends. They readily indulge this curiosity by toying with various clever possibilities, including Me AND You, but the truth is likely a meaning of their individual talents that has not been made to the public. Their ultimate expression of their dance music phenomenon is attributed to their foot stamping and hair flying techniques. They have a unique niche in electronic music by consistently selecting productions that induce their audience into a somatic frenzy.
M.A.N.D.Y. joined Booka Shade and DJ T to create the Get Physical Records and produced a caliber of electricity that rippled throughout the EDM community and into the relative mainstream that started first in Frankfurt and then in Berlin and now all over the world. When all three groups joined forces, they have pushed the boundaries of dance music to compile an enviable arsenal of electro kissing house while caressing disco and flirting with techno. With Booka Shade, M.A.N.D.Y was responsible for the club hit “Body Language,” which was named “Ibiza Track of the Season 2005” and has been licensed to more than 100 compilations. M.A.N.D.Y continues to power through with a perpetual rebirth into pulsating beats and pretty lights.
This dynamic duo are some of the most heavily booked house-DJs in Germany and continually gaining recognition internationally. Get Physical label released Hausmusik Vol. 1 last year with the idea of creating music well-suited for home enjoyment as well as on sweaty dance floors. The home listening series returns this month for a second time with the release of Hausmusik Vol. 2 with cuts from James Holden, M.A.N.D.Y. and Francesco Tristano to demonstrate the professional sound systems and sweaty dance floor antiques from the comfort of your home or a private party for an intimate selection of people and music. Don’t miss out on Get Physical label curator M.A.N.D.Y (Phillipp Jung) at Up & Down (244 W 14th St, New York, New York 10011) in NYC for this week’s installment of the Porn Shop. Highlighting a charged path from Moscow to Miami, the Russian innovative trio who amplify the progressive and electronic house sound are known as Swanky Tunes. The group formed in 1998, experimenting with different electronic styles in pursuit of their own sound. At first, there were techno sounds mixed with vintage synthesizers. Then the group moved into a distinctly big-beat influenced sound. These days, hints of the techno, electro-80’s, and the contemporary progressive house movements are all finding their way into the mix. With their uplifting anthemic sound, the Smolensk based music pioneers deliver dance floor bangers to nightclubs and festivals around the globe. Whether it be in the studio, on stage, or the global music charts, the Showland label headliners are at the forefront of electronic dance music.
Swanky Tunes have performed on worldwide stages including Laidback Luke’s Super You & Me at Tomorrowland, Sensation White, Ultra Music Festival, Global Gathering, Electric Daisy Carnival and more. Swanky Tunes have also performed at Tiësto’s Club Life at Pacha Ibiza, the Swedish House Mafia One Last Tour, and Avicii’s Le7els tour. In addition, Swanky Tunes also held down a residency at XS Las Vegas. Of all the exciting new house sounds coming out of the East these days, Swanky Tunes ranks among the most note worthy. Swanky Tunes were named ‘Best Musical Group’ in 2006 and 2007 at the Russian Dance Music Awards and they are currently ranked #14 among the Top 100 DJs of Russia. Internationally, their tracks and remixes have been issued on Mixmash, Spinnin’ Records, Refune, Size Records and Cr2 Records. Swanky Tunes last releases have been heavily supported by: Tiesto, David Guetta, Sandern Van Doorn, Swedish House Mafia (Axwell, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingross), Laidback Luke and Dirty South. 1. When did you start DJing and what or who were your influences at the time?
I first got into Djing when I was 15 years old, my first mixtape had a 50 Cent Track, Snoop Dogg Track & Mariah Carey Track I used to play it at school on my Mini Disc with a pair of computer speakers that I wired up to a 9volt battery. At that point in time the main influences for me were all the Power 106 LA Djs, I really looked up to them, also my buddy DJ EFX for helping me with my first pair of turntables.
2. What is your best DJ memory?
I’d say hearing my track “Megazord” being played at EDC Las Vegas this past year.
3. Out of all the tracks you’ve spun, which one never fails?
Theres a lot out there that always pop off, I’d say – “This Is Dirty” by DVBBS & MOTi, no matter what venue I play at people always lose their mind for that track, its heavy.
4. Who are your biggest musical influences currently?
Porter Robinson, My Boys at Trapstyle Bass Collective and Blasterjaxx
5. You have been blowing up on the West Coast recently, what has contributed to that?
50% the music 50% the party, I bring something fresh to the scene on the West Coast, I’m constantly finding new ways to bend genres, I’ve even dropped a Taylor Swift Remix in the club before and I think people appreciate my willingness to take risk and be innovative. Not only that but I love to incite madness, everyone shows up knowing its going to be a party.
6. Tell us 5 things about yourself that people don’t know.
- I once hit a 7-10 split while bowling
- An alpaca showed up at my birthday party
- I once traded a car for a watch
- I don’t like fennel seeds
- I used to practice using the force on small pencils and pens
